1966 Norton Atlas 750cc
Price now reduced to £6,450 from £7,950. This extremely handsome Norton is being offered on behalf of the owner. Below is the information he has given us: -
The Atlas produces about 55 "soft" BHP making it more powerful and easier to ride than the BSA Lightning and Triumph Bonneville 650s. It is a relaxed short or long distance ride.
This bike has Matching numbers and a Norton Owners Club dating certificate. It has had an easy, low mileage, life in the USA having been garaged and not run for years. It was brought back to the UK a year ago. I had the engine running within a couple of hours. It has since been through a comprehensive re-commissioning and I have covered about 1000 trouble free miles.
The handling and stopping are excellent, courtesy of the Slimline Featherbed frame, Roadholder forks, modern tyres and the upgraded TLS front brake. It feels relaxed in traffic and at all legal speeds and is capable of much more.
The engine starts easily and runs smoothly with no smoke or unpleasant noise. The gearbox selects cleanly and neutral can be found easily.
Front forks have been stripped and rebuilt. The TLS front brake has been relined and set up by Classic Brake Services. The original Dunlop rims are in good condition, and each have a pair of new Avon Roadriders and inner tubes.
The petrol tank has been pressure tested and professionally resprayed and lacquered with a modern car paint (Peugeot Ultimate Red) which is an excellent match to the original. All other bodywork is either black or chrome.
The electrics have been thoroughly checked and converted to run as one would expect in the UK. The ignition key switches the power on, and lights are controlled by the rider via new switchgear. A new regulator/rectifier is fitted in place of the old Zenner and silicon rectifier. The charging system correctly charges a new battery. The bike is fitted with working period winkers.
The aged Boyer was replaced with a new Pazon electronic system and new coil/leads/plugs/caps.
The carburettor was poorly set up, perhaps for US fuel or altitude, but with a new correct slide, larger main jet, a new air filter and some fine tuning, it now runs cleanly on UK pump fuel.
The bike (being an export model?) has a Commando clutch, a triplex primary chain and a Commando rear wheel incorporating the cush drive. Previously this clutch was incorrectly set up (I suspect when the previous owner fitted the sintered clutchplate upgrade – they are not the same thickness!). The clutchplate stack must be the correct height and the new plates were slipping. It was probably the reason the previous owner stopped riding the bike. The clutch is now light, does not slip, and the primary drive is now bullet proof and will not require any attention for many many miles.
The V5 is in my name. The bike is classified Historic, so cheap insurance, no MOT or Tax and ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) compliant!
