1964 AJS CS 500cc factory competition ISDT special
Priced at SOLD. We are pleased to be able to offer this historically significant AMC competition bike for sale on behalf of the present owner.
BGC 978 B is an AJS 500 CS competition bike, one of only 3 built for the 1964 ISDT. This particular bike, ridden by Arthur Bates, helped him earn a silver in East Germany that year, only narrowly missing out on a gold.
For the 1965 and 1966 events, it was ridden by John Lewis, again with good results. It was subsequently sold by Comerfords and been in storage since, after a short period of road use. This is the first time that this bike has been brought to market in 50 years.
It has been run and runs well. It still has the intact scrutineer seals on the engine. It sounds powerful, which is not surprising as this engine reputedly produces over 40 BHP.
The bike will need minor re commissioning if it is to be used again.
It has the original cardboard logbook, showing AMC motorcycles, Plumstead as the first keeper, as well as a V5 document. It is registered as a Matchless, which is something AMC did at the time with their works AJS badged bikes.
Perhaps of additional interest, Steve McQueen rode in the 1964 ISDT, and there are also pictures of him with Arthur Bates and the bike.
